Dev Summit debrief: SOA proliferation through specification

Howdy all, It was a pleasure chatting with you at this year's Developer Summit[1] about how we might give SOA a shot in the arm by creating (and building from) specifications. The slides are available on the RESTBase project pages[2] and the session notes are available on Etherpad[3]. I'm eager to keep the conversation going on the mailing list, and want to address a couple items that came up (or were missing) during the session, as well as prompt for further discussion. I mentioned after the presentation that we're using our spec to drive our automated testing. I added some info about that to slide #14 in the slides[2]. The idea is that, since Swagger lets us add custom fields to a spec, we can augment each endpoint specification with a functional description of its expected inputs and outputs. During testing, we parse the spec and verify that these indeed hold true. There's a lot of opportunity for enhancement of our (currently very basic) approach to this, but it's already proving pretty handy from a coverage standpoint. There was a question in the notes[3] about Swagger's support for internationalization, but I'm not familiar with the use case in mind. How might an API differ, aside from the content of fields in a specified model, under different localizations? Might users want the models themselves (or parameter names, etc.) to vary? Cheers! Performance of parsing links?

I'm writing a parser function extension that outputs about 5000 lines of text (an organizational chart of a company) as a nested, bulleted list. * Bob the CEO ** Jane Jones ** Mike Smith *** etc. It takes about 3 seconds (real time) for MediaWiki to render this list, which is acceptable. However, if I make it a list of links, which is more useful: * [[User:Bob | Bob the CEO]] ** [[User:Jane | Jane Jones]] ** [[User:Mike | Mike Smith]] the rendering time more than doubles to 6-8 seconds, which users perceive as too slow. Is there a faster implementation for rendering a large number of links, rather than returning the wikitext list and having MediaWiki render it? Request for comments for RESTBase?

Hi. There's been quite a bit of discussion about RESTBase lately. Is there a request for comments on mediawiki.org about RESTBase? I looked at <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Requests_for_comment> and didn't see one. >From my limited understanding of what's being proposed, I'd personally be a lot more comfortable with the idea if someone from both the software architecture side (Brion, Tim, or equivalent) and someone from the operations side (Mark, Faidon, Giuseppe, or equivalent) weighed in and signed off on what's being proposed. This may have already happened somewhere, but I didn't see anything in my brief searching and poking around on pages such as <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/RESTBase>. This is the Collaboration team update for 1/28. We are in early stages of improving the user experience for enabling and disabling Flow boards. We enabled Flow on two pages on Portuguese Wikipedia, and are preparing to finish enabling Flow for the Co-op (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Co-op). We fixed an urgent issue caused by moving a regular page into Flow's topic namespace (both preventing the issue in the future and treating the symptoms this time). Matt Flaschen

Technical question about FQDN

May someone help me? I have read the short documentation of variables like: $wgInternalServer $wgServer But I don't understand how combine them to get the Mediawiki accessible internally with a local IP AND externally with a FQDN without broking the absolute links of the CSS and javascripts. Archcom plans

I just want to thank everybody who participated in the 'future of the architecture committee' session at the dev summit today -- we had some great discussion and good ideas and concerns from a lot of people. Damon has proposed that the committee plan a provisional governance model formalizing the Archcom and clarifying what we do, what we don't do, and what people expect out of us beyond looking over RfCs. Provisional plan is to have something in place or ready to ratify by the European hackathon in Lyon (in May: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Lyon_Hackathon_2015 ) More details to come as we work stuff out -- I think we'll want to do some open discussion on the subject, so don't be shy with ideas, constructive criticism, etc! -- brion

ResourceLoader: modifying dependencies dynamically?

I have an extension that affects wiki tables using JavaScript. In order for it to work, I need it to load *before* one of the core JS modules, jquery.tablesorter. Is there a supported way to modify the ResourceLoader dependencies of jquery.tablesorter? Effectively I want to do something like: $r = getResourceLoader(); $r->moduleInfos['jquery.tablesorter']['dependencies'][] = 'my.custom.extension.js'; before any JS modules actually get used. I think any decision to split wikis should not be made without consensus within the affected communities. From a technical standpoint, it would be much easier to decide in favour of a split, but I'm worried that the social ramifications of such a decision would be overlooked in a discussion among developers. It might be a good idea to present the challenges of continuing to maintain Language Converter to the communities, but if, for example, it turns out that having a single Chinese language is better for our free knowledge goals, then it might still be worth investing the time needed to overcome the technical hurdles.
